HIV or Human Immunodeficiency Virus is a viral disorder that can destroy a certain type of white blood cells and can cause AIDS. Infection by HIV eventually results in progressive deterioration of the body’s immune system, allowing infections to develop. Currently, there is no vaccine for HIV. However, there are treatments available to enable most people with the virus to live a long and healthy life. With early diagnosis and effective treatment, most people with HIV will not go on to develop AIDS.

• H – Human – This particular virus can only infect humans.
• I – Immunodeficiency – HIV weakens your immune system by destroying important cells that fight disease and infection. A deficient immune system can\’t protect you.
• V – Virus – A virus can only reproduce itself by taking over a cell in the body of its host.
